Answer first
A copy Cartier Astrotourbillon is a watch built to look like the Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Astrotourbillon. Cartier does not make it and does not sell it. In the US, importing, selling, or trafficking such a watch breaks trademark law. This page covers the real watch, what a copy contains, and the legal position. It is not a buying guide.
The real watch
Cartier showed the Rotonde de Cartier Astrotourbillon in 2010. The movement is caliber 9454 MC. It is hand wound. The tourbillon carriage mounts at the dial center and orbits the dial axis once per minute, carrying the seconds hand on its arm. Cartier listed a 47 mm case for the first version and offered it in palladium and platinum. Later versions included skeleton and carbon crystal models. Production counts were small.

What a copy contains
A copy cannot use caliber 9454 MC. Cartier does not supply that movement to other firms. Copies use one of three builds:
- A stock movement with a decorative bridge shaped like a tourbillon cage.
- A low-cost third-party tourbillon. The escapement turns. The finish does not match Cartier.
- A quartz movement with a printed dial. The cage does not turn.
Case metal is the second gap. Copies use steel with plating, not palladium or platinum. Weight and color differ. Caseback engravings are copied from photos, so serial numbers repeat across units.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. The Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114, gives the trademark owner a civil claim. US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit watches at ports of entry. The personal-use exception is narrow and does not cover marked counterfeit goods in most cases.
Checks that separate the two
- Price. A Swiss central tourbillon costs far more than a copy listing.
- Papers. Cartier issues a certificate with a serial that matches the caseback.
- Movement. Cartier engraves its bridges and stamps a movement number.
- Cage path. On caliber 9454 MC the cage orbits the dial center. A fixed cage in a side position is the wrong design.
What is not known
Cartier does not publish total production for the Astrotourbillon line. Copy sellers do not publish movement origin or factory names. A claim of Swiss assembly on a listing cannot be checked from the listing alone.
