Short answer

Breguet reference numbers for chronographs are four digits. Published Breguet catalogs and auction records cover the Type XX and Type 21 lines under numbers such as 3800, 3820, and 3820ST. No Breguet chronograph reference 2000 appears in the material reviewed for this guide. When a listing says "Breguet 2000," the digits refer to something else: a case serial, a seller code, or a calendar year.

What the number 2000 means on listings

  • Seller code. Replica sellers use short model codes. "2000" is a listing ID on some sites, not a Breguet reference.
  • Case serial. On aftermarket cases, "2000" can be a batch stamp. Breguet puts the serial on the caseback next to the reference.
  • Year. Some sellers write "Breguet 2000" to mean a watch dated to the year 2000.

Breguet chronograph references that do exist

Breguet made the Type XX for the French Air Force starting in 1954. The modern reissue arrived in 1995 as ref 3800, followed by the Type XX Transatlantique ref 3820. Both use a Lemania base movement marked with a Breguet caliber number. The Marine line also carries chronographs. Auction archives list these numbers next to a caliber, a case size, and a dial layout.

Checks that separate a real chronograph from a copy

  1. Caseback numbers. Look for a four-digit reference and a separate serial. The two must match the papers.
  2. Movement. Open the case with a watchmaker. A Type XX carries a Lemania base caliber with Breguet engraving on the bridges. Copies use an ETA/Valjoux 7750, a Seagull ST19, or quartz.
  3. Subdial layout. A 7750 build puts a 30-minute counter at 12 and a 12-hour counter at 6. Other base calibers place counters elsewhere. The layout must match the movement inside.
  4. Engraving. Laser engraving leaves shallow, even lines. Breguet stamps and cuts deeper. Compare the font and the spacing of the serial.
  5. Weight. A solid gold Breguet chronograph weighs more than a steel copy of the same size. A gold case that feels light is plated.
  6. Pusher feel. Start and stop should engage with a firm click and no grinding.
  7. Archive. Breguet keeps records for a share of its output. A written extract that matches the serial adds value. Not every watch has a record.

Price is a filter

Prices for a Type XX ref 3800 in steel move with the market. Check completed auction results for the exact reference before you pay. A price in the hundreds of US dollars for a gold chronograph points to a copy. No genuine Breguet chronograph sells at that level.

If you bought one

Take the watch to an independent watchmaker. Ask for photos of the movement, the caseback stamp, and the inside of the caseback. Send the photos to a Breguet service center with the serial. Keep the listing text and the payment record. File a dispute with the payment platform if the numbers do not match. A seller who names a reference that does not exist has no defense.

What is not known

Breguet does not publish a full production ledger. Serial ranges for the Type XX reissue are not public in complete form. A claim about a "2000 chronograph" reference needs a document from Breguet or a matching auction record. Without one, treat the watch as unverified.
