Short answer
A fake Cartier women's watch is a copy of a Cartier model made and sold without Cartier's authorization. Most come from factories in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, China. Retail prices run from about $25 for a quartz Tank copy to $400 or more for a Ballon Bleu with a cloned automatic movement. Cartier sells only through its own boutiques, its e-boutique and authorized dealers. In the United States, importing or selling counterfeit watches is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, and civil claims fall under the Lanham Act.
Which Cartier models get copied
Counterfeiters copy the women's lines that sell the most units. The usual targets:
- Tank, introduced 1917. Tank Must and Tank Française are the most copied.
- Panthère de Cartier, first made 1914 and relaunched 1983.
- Ballon Bleu de Cartier, launched 2007. The 33 mm steel version is a common target.
- Santos, dating to 1904.
- Baignoire and Ronde, smaller-volume lines with fewer copies.
Genuine prices set the gap. A steel Tank Must small runs about $3,200. A 33 mm steel Ballon Bleu runs about $6,900. Gold models start near $15,000. Prices change, so treat these as reference points.
Price tiers in the replica market
- $20 to $60. Quartz movement, mineral glass, plated case, shallow caseback engraving.
- $80 to $180. Japanese quartz or a low-grade automatic, 316L steel case, better dial print.
- $200 to $450. Sapphire crystal, cloned ETA or Miyota movement, sharper engraving and closer case dimensions. Sellers call these 1:1 or mirror quality. The term has no standard meaning.
What separates a fake from a genuine watch
- Caseback engraving depth and font. Genuine engravings are cut, not laser-etched on the surface.
- Serial and reference numbers. Cartier stamps both. They should match the model and the paperwork.
- The crown cabochon. Ballon Bleu uses a blue synthetic spinel set in a rounded crown guard.
- "Swiss Made" placement and the date window font.
- Bracelet screws. Genuine Santos and Tank screws are flush and finished on both ends.
- Weight. Solid gold cases weigh far more than gold-plated brass or steel.
Legal and customs risk in the US
U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy counterfeit trademarked goods. The $800 de minimis exemption does not apply to them, and the personal-use exemption does not cover counterfeit items. Trafficking carries up to 10 years imprisonment for a first offense. Cartier and Richemont also pursue civil suits against sellers and, in some cases, buyers who resell.
How to verify before you buy
Buy from a Cartier boutique, the Cartier e-boutique or an authorized dealer. Ask for the certificate, the serial number and the original receipt. Cartier service centers can inspect a watch and confirm whether it is genuine. If a seller offers a new Ballon Bleu for $300, the watch is not genuine. There is no wholesale channel for real Cartier watches at that price.
