Short answer
A fake Patek Philippe hand-wound watch fails on two things: the metal of the case and the movement inside it. Patek builds hand-wound Calatravas in gold or platinum. Reference 5196 uses the caliber 215 PS with small seconds at 6 o'clock. Reference 6119 uses the caliber 30-255 PS. Copies use a third-party hand-wound movement, a steel case with plating, and dial print that differs from the catalog.
Check four items: case metal, reference number, movement, and rate.
Case metal and reference code
Hand-wound Calatrava references 5196 and 6119 come in yellow gold (J), rose gold (R), white gold (G), and platinum (P). Patek does not list a steel 5196. A steel case with gold color is a fake.
- 5196: 37 mm case, solid caseback, small seconds at 6 o'clock.
- 6119: 39 mm case, caliber 30-255 PS, 65-hour power reserve, sapphire display back.
- Inside the caseback: 750 hallmark for 18k gold, the metal code letter, and the case number.
Movement checks
Caliber 215 PS runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), carries 18 jewels, and holds a power reserve near 44 hours. Copies often run at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) or at 21,600 vph with 17 jewels. Finishing on a real 215 PS shows Geneva stripes on the bridges, circular graining on the wheels, and chamfered edges. Copies show painted stripes and flat edges.
The movement number sits on a bridge. Patek records movement numbers and case numbers. The company sells an Extract from the Archives, a paid search of its records, and can confirm a serial number against the file.
Dial and hands
The 5196 has no lume. The dial carries applied gold baton markers, a chemin de fer minute track, and the print "Patek Philippe" and "Geneve". Copies show heavier strokes, wrong letter spacing, and a subdial that sits off the center axis.
Check the subdial at 6 o'clock. It holds the seconds hand on a real 5196. Many low-cost copies move the seconds hand to the center.
Price and rate
Patek lists the 5196 at five-figure USD prices in gold and platinum. Pre-owned pieces sell for less, still in five figures. Copies sell for USD 200 to USD 1,000.
A timegrapher shows the rate. The Patek Philippe Seal tolerance is -3 to +2 seconds per day. A copy often misses that band by a wide margin.
What a photo cannot show
A JPEG does not show weight, winding feel, or rate. A fake with a solid caseback and a decorated third-party movement can look correct on a screen. US law bans the import and sale of counterfeit watches.
