Short answer

A fake Reverso Tribute Chronograph fails on three points: the case, the second dial, and the movement. The real watch is a dual-face chronograph. Its case slides inside a cradle and flips. The movement is a rectangular hand-wound caliber. Copies sell for $200 to $700. The genuine watch sells in the low five figures.

What the real watch is

Jaeger-LeCoultre added the Reverso Tribute Chronograph in 2023. The Reverso case dates to 1931. The Tribute family started in 2016, the line's 85th year.

The watch carries two dials on one movement. One face shows the time. The other runs the chronograph. The counter reads to 30 minutes. The caliber is hand-wound. Steel and gold versions exist. Jaeger-LeCoultre does not publish production totals for this model.

Retail for steel sits in the low five figures in US dollars. Gold costs more. Prices move with the market, so check a boutique or a recent auction result instead of a resale listing.

Checks that fail on copies

  • Slide. Hold the cradle and push the case. A real Reverso slides on rails, then flips. Copies use a fixed back, a hinge, or a slide that binds.
  • Second dial. Both faces on the real watch run live off one movement. Copies print a second dial or fit a dead plate with no working hands.
  • Movement. Caliber 860 is rectangular and hand-wound. Copies use a round ETA clone or a quartz module inside a rectangular spacer. A round movement in a rectangular case leaves gaps at the corners.
  • Dial work. Tribute dials use applied markers, sunray brushing, and track lines with sharp edges. Copies show flat paint, thick fonts, and markers set off center.
  • Pushers. On the real watch they start, stop, and reset with a firm click. Copy pushers feel soft or stick.
  • Engraving. Caseback engraving on copies is shallow and wide. Serial numbers repeat across units.
  • Price. A "new" Tribute Chronograph under $3,000 is a copy. No exception.

Where copies come from

Listings for copies of this model trace to factories in southern China. Sellers pull photos from auction archives and work from them. Steel copies are common. Gold copies are rare, because solid gold costs more than the copy sells for. A "gold" Tribute Chronograph at a low price is plated steel or base metal.

US law

Importing a counterfeit watch into the United States is illegal. 18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. Customs can seize the parcel, and the buyer loses the payment.

How to verify before you pay

  1. Ask for a photo of the movement, not the dial.
  2. Ask for a video of the case sliding and flipping.
  3. Send the serial to a Jaeger-LeCoultre service center. A service estimate confirms the movement.
  4. Buy from an authorized dealer or an auction house with a return policy.
  5. Pay with a method that allows a chargeback.
