Short answer
You can check a Speedmaster Automatic in four places: the movement, the case back, the dial, and the serial number. Omega keeps production and service records for its watches. Replica makers do not. A seller who cannot show a serial number and an Omega service history is selling a counterfeit or a watch with unclear origin. In the US, trafficking in counterfeit watches is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320.
Models that get copied
- Speedmaster Automatic "Reduced" 3510.50. Case size 39 mm. Caliber 3220, an ETA 2890-2 base with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module stacked on top.
- Speedmaster Date and Day-Date. Case size 39 mm to 40 mm. Caliber 1152 or 1155.
- Speedmaster Racing. Caliber 3330.
- Speedmaster Co-Axial. Caliber 9300 and 9900.
The Moonwatch Professional is hand wound, 42 mm, caliber 1861 or 3861. It is not an automatic. A listing that calls a Moonwatch Professional an automatic describes a product that does not exist.
Fake Speedmaster Automatic Synonyms: Term Guide for Buyers
Four checks
- Movement. Ask for a photo with the case back off. The 3220 carries a module, so the case sits thicker than a Moonwatch case. Rotor finishing and perlage show tool marks on fakes.
- Case back. Genuine Speedmasters carry a reference number, a serial number, and the Omega symbol. Engraving depth is even across the font. Etched replicas show shallow, uneven lines and wrong spacing between characters.
- Dial. Subdials on the 3510.50 sit close to the center. Replicas spread the subdials outward or misalign the date window. Printed text on fakes shows flat edges under magnification.
- Serial number. Omega can confirm a serial against its production records. A number that returns no record, or a number that matches a different reference, is a flag.
US legal position
Importing a counterfeit watch is illegal, including a single item for personal use. US Customs and Border Protection can seize the item and send it for destruction. The Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114, lets Omega sue sellers for damages and profits. Penalties under 18 U.S.C. § 2320 reach 10 years for a first trafficking offense and 20 years for a repeat offense.
Fake Speedmaster Automatic: The Common Question, Answered
What is unknown
Replica prices vary by source. No verifiable record publishes them. I cannot confirm the quality claims that resellers make, and no independent lab publishes test data on replica Speedmaster movements.
