What a 3861 copy is
A "3861 copy" is a replica Speedmaster built to look like the Moonwatch that Omega sells with caliber 3861. The movement inside is not a copy of the 3861. No replica factory makes a co-axial escapement or a movement with METAS certification. Sellers use "3861" as shorthand for a case, dial and manual-wind chronograph that match the outside of the watch. Nothing inside matches the escapement.
Genuine caliber 3861 specs
- Manual wind, co-axial escapement, 26 jewels
- 3 Hz, 21,600 vph, free-sprung balance, silicon hairspring
- 50-hour power reserve
- Master Chronometer certification by METAS, magnetic resistance to 15,000 gauss
- Counters: running seconds at 9, 30 minutes at 3, 12 hours at 6
What the replica movement is
Most Speedmaster replicas run a Seagull ST19. The ST19 is a manual-wind column-wheel chronograph derived from the Venus 175. It beats at 21,600 vph like the 3861, but the layout differs. Expect 40 to 45 hours of reserve, a index-adjusted regulator, and a plated finish that imitates Omega stripes and engraving. Sub-dial spacing is set by the case, not the movement, so the 3-6-9 layout can look correct while the movement does not.
Omega Caliber 3861 Replica Watch: What to Know Before You Buy
Checks before you pay
- Ask for a photo of the movement with the caseback off. A decorated ST19 is visible at the balance cock and the column wheel.
- Ask for a timegrapher reading. Rate within plus or minus 15 seconds a day is realistic. A reading of plus or minus 2 seconds on a $250 watch is a copied number.
- Run the chronograph. Start, stop and reset three times. The reset should snap to zero without drift.
- Check case thickness. A 3861 Moonwatch case measures about 13.6 mm. Replicas often run 14 mm and up.
- Check the crown and pushers. Winding should feel dry, not gritty. Pusher travel should be short.
Price bands and what they buy
- $150 to $250: stamped dial, basic ST19, thin plating, no service parts
- $300 to $450: better dial print, sapphire or hesalite option, closer case profile
- $500 and up: decorated movement, closer bracelet, still no co-axial escapement
Limits you should accept
No replica 3861 movement holds Master Chronometer certification. METAS tests the cased watch, not the movement alone, so the test cannot apply to a replica. Service is the other limit. Parts come from the seller, not from Omega. A watchmaker who works on Swiss movements may refuse the job. Water resistance is a claim from the seller, not a tested figure. Treat any depth rating as unproven until a shop pressure-tests the case.
Legal note
Sale of counterfeit watches is illegal in the US and the EU. A replica marked with an Omega logo and name is a counterfeit. Customs can seize it. Buying one carries risk of loss, and resale has no legal path.
