A replica Cartier Santos is a copy of the Cartier Santos watch. Copies sell in three price bands. The lowest band uses quartz movements and plated metal. The middle band uses automatic movements and steel cases. The top band copies case dimensions and uses cloned or off-the-shelf Swiss-style movements. In the United States, import and sale of counterfeit goods is a federal crime. A replica carries no Cartier warranty and no auction resale value.
What the original Santos is
Louis Cartier designed the Santos in 1904 for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Watch historians cite it as one of the first wristwatches made for a man.
Cartier relaunched the Santos de Cartier line in 2018. The large steel case measures 39.8 mm wide, 47.5 mm lug to lug, and 9.38 mm thick. The medium case measures 35.1 mm wide and 41.9 mm lug to lug. Both use the Cartier calibre 1847 MC, an automatic movement that beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve near 40 hours.
The Santos-Dumont line is thinner, about 7.3 mm on the steel large model. Some Santos-Dumont references use quartz movements.
Cartier list prices for steel Santos de Cartier models sit in the $6,000 to $8,000 range. Prices change with metal, size, and year.
Replica price bands
- $50 to $120. Quartz movement. Brass case with chrome or gold plating. Mineral glass. Case width off by 2 mm or more.
- $150 to $400. Automatic movement, often a low-grade 2813 or a Miyota copy. 316L steel case. Mineral glass on most units. Crown and bezel screws are cosmetic.
- $400 to $900. Sold as super clone or 1:1. 316L or 904L steel. Sapphire crystal. ETA 2824 or Miyota 9015 movement with a decorated rotor. Case dimensions closer to the original.
No replica carries a genuine Cartier 1847 MC. Cartier does not sell that calibre to outside makers.
Checks on a Santos copy
- Measure the case. A large Santos de Cartier is 39.8 mm wide. Many copies measure 40.5 mm or 42 mm.
- Measure the thickness. The original large is 9.38 mm. Copies often run 11 mm to 13 mm because of the movement and caseback build.
- Count the bezel screws. Eight screws. Slots align with the case edge on the original. Copies show Phillips heads or slots at random angles.
- Look at the crown. Octagonal shape, fluted edge, blue synthetic spinel cabochon. Copies use glass or plastic, and the shape is round.
- Check the bracelet. SmartLink links release with a push tab. QuickSwitch lets the strap detach without tools. Copies lack one or both systems.
- Read the dial. Roman numerals, a rail track, and the word CARTIER hidden in the VII numeral at 7 o'clock.
- Inspect the caseback. Engraving depth and font weight match the case metal on the original.
- Time the beat. 28,800 vibrations per hour is 8 beats per second. A quartz copy ticks once per second.
Legal status in the US
18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual.
15 U.S.C. § 1117(c) lets a trademark owner collect statutory damages up to $2,000,000 per counterfeit mark for willful use.
19 U.S.C. § 1526 lets US Customs and Border Protection seize and forfeit counterfeit goods. The personal-use exemption does not apply to counterfeits. In fiscal year 2023, CBP reported 19,724 seizures of counterfeit goods with an estimated manufacturer's suggested retail price of $2.7 billion.
Service and resale
Cartier service centers do not repair counterfeit watches. Independent watchmakers in the US can refuse the work for legal reasons. Parts for cloned movements are not stocked by Cartier.
Replica Santos watches sell on the second-hand market for less than the buyer paid. Auction houses do not list them. Pawn shops and trade-in programs reject them.
