Short answer

IW328009 is an IWC reference in the Pilot's Watch line. A replica copies the case shape, dial layout, and hands of that watch. Copies sell from about $70 to $450. Price follows the movement, the case finish, and the crystal. The reference number itself tells you nothing about copy quality.

IWC's own site is the only source for the exact variant. Reference databases disagree on which dial and strap pair with which last three digits.

What the number means

IWC puts a six-digit code after the letters IW. The first digits mark the watch family. The last digits mark dial color, case metal, and strap. IW328009 sits in the Pilot's Watch Automatic group. IWC moves dials and straps inside one family, so a nearby number can look different on the wrist.

Pull the current spec sheet from IWC before you compare. Case diameter, lug width, crystal type, and water resistance matter more than the digits. Replica listings copy those figures and often change one of them.

Movement tiers

  1. Quartz. Thin case, ticking seconds hand, no rotor noise. Lowest cost. Easy to spot.
  2. Miyota 9015 or a copy. Automatic, 24 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, about 42 hours of reserve.
  3. Sellita SW200-1 or a Chinese clone of it. Automatic, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, about 38 hours of reserve. Top tier in most listings.

Ask which movement is inside. A seller who cannot name it is selling the quartz tier or does not know the stock.

Where copies differ from the genuine watch

  • Crystal. Genuine sapphire gets a two-sided anti-reflective coat. Copies coat one side or use mineral glass.
  • Lume. Genuine dials use Super-LumiNova. Copies use a cheaper compound or skip the hands.
  • Movement finish. Rotor engraving and perlage are absent or shallow.
  • Case thickness. A quartz copy runs 1 mm to 2 mm thinner than the genuine case.
  • Date wheel font. Copies use a generic font.

Checks before payment

  • Timestamp photo or video with the watch running and the crown pulled to the time-setting position.
  • Date change test. A slow flip points to a low-grade movement.
  • Caseback photo. Compare engraving depth and font against the IWC spec sheet.
  • Dial macro shot for print quality on the markers and the logo.
  • Bracelet or strap photos with the clasp closed and the end links fitted.

Water resistance

Genuine IWC Pilot's Watch Automatic models carry a rating printed in the spec sheet. Copies do not. Gaskets in a copy are untested, so keep the watch out of showers, pools, and salt water. No claim on a dealer page replaces a pressure test.

Legal notes for US buyers

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. Customs and Border Protection can seize a shipment, and a personal-use claim does not protect it. Card and bank payments can be reversed or frozen if the seller is flagged.

What is unknown

Factory names in this market change. A listing that names a workshop does not prove that workshop made the watch. Serial numbers on copies do not trace to IWC. Nobody outside the seller can verify the parts in a sealed case.
